老羅斯福演講:民主國家的公民權利

Citizenship in a Republic

以下摘錄自《Scrum,用一半的時間做兩倍的事》1。原文為美國總統老羅斯福於 1910 年在巴黎索邦大學的演說「民主國家的公民權利」(Citizenship in a Republic)2

榮耀並不屬於批評的人,亦不屬於指出勇者如何失敗,或點出別人哪裡應該做的更好的人。榮耀屬於實際身處在競技場中、臉上沾滿塵土與血汗,仍英勇奮戰的勇者;他們會犯錯,而且一錯再錯,因為錯誤與缺失必會伴隨努力而來;但是他們都確切地知道要奮戰不懈、知道要充滿熱誠、全心投入;獻身於崇高的志業。他們最好的結局是終於功成名就;就算失敗,最差的下場只不過就是在勇敢奮戰後落敗。他們的定位,絕非那些冷漠懦弱、不知勝利與失敗為何物的人所能相提並論。

It is not the critic who counts;
not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles,
or where the doer of deeds could have done them better.
The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena,
whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood;
who strives valiantly; who errs,
who comes short again and again,
because there is no effort without error and shortcoming;
but who does actually strive to do the deeds;
who knows great enthusiasms,
the great devotions;
who spends himself in a worthy cause;
who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement,
and who at the worst,
if he fails,
at least fails while daring greatly,
so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.
